Heather Henson
Bible / Band / Choir
I have a passion for teaching
my students to read, play, sing, and feel music. My prayer is that they
will realize that their talents are best used to praise and honor our
Lord Jesus! I am the band and choral director at American Christian
Academy. This school year I will be teaching 4th and 5th grade general music, beginning band, advanced band, 2nd-4th grade Jubilare!, 5th & 6th grade chorus, a 7th & 8th grade introduction to percussion class, and a 7th grade
Bible class. I grew up in Tequesta, Florida and attended The King‟s
Academy for grades 1-12. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music
Education degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. I was
the drum major for two years while at Samford and my principal
instrument is the clarinet…that means that if all else fails I could
stand on the street corner, put out a hat, and hopefully earn some meal
money playing it! I began my teaching career in the Jefferson County
School System and served for a short time as interim Assistant Director
of Bands at Gardendale High School. I then served as Assistant Director
of Bands and Choral Director at Oak Grove High School and Alliance
Elementary, then as Director of Bands at Pittman Middle School in
Hueytown, Alabama. I was the visual coordinator, drill writer, color
guard director, and winter guard director for the Brookwood High School
band program for twelve years. I frequently enjoy adjudicating drum
majors and color guards around the Southeast at various marching band
competitions. I am a member of MENC: The National Association for Music
Education, the National Band Association, the Alabama Bandmasters
Association, Women Band Directors International, and the International
Clarinet Association.
Caleigh, Chanley, and Gabriel Henson are the children God has given me to nurture and love above all other students at ACA, for they are my very own!
The gifts that God has given me are the gift of encouragement and the gift of visual design focused around beautiful music…whether that be through dance, interpretive movement, a PowerPoint presentation, or my personal favorite…conducting! I love to SEE or create beauty and HEAR beautiful music simultaneously! I also enjoy swimming, walking, reading, fashion, and rolling my car windows down when I am alone and singing loudly while doing the airplane with my arm in the wind.
